For centuries, public markets have been synonymous with culture and style, expressed through fresh food and drink, flowers, clothing, arts and crafts and jewelry sold by local vendors in open air venue. With over 50 years of operating markets in and around Paris, the Bensidoun family brought the concept to Illinois in 1997 with the opening of the Wheaton French Market and a rich tradition of American open-air markets, European style, began. The first farmer’s market was held in 2003 and Sugar Grove resident Pat Graceffa volunteered to help. Since that time Pat and a host of volunteers, including Village Trustee Mari Johnson, ran what quickly became a tradition in Sugar Grove, the Farmers Market. Pat and Mari spent their Saturday’s from early morning to mid-afternoon at the Market, not to mention hundreds of additional off-site hours organizing and managing. The growth and success of the market has led to the need for professional guidance and the new relationship with Bensidoun USA.
Trustee Johnson stated, “The Village is pleased to be able to continue the tradition of an open air market. We encourage you to visit the Sugar Grove French Market this year and I hope to see you there on opening day. Be sure to visit the Village’s website www.sugar-grove.il.us often and to read your monthly newsletter so that you don’t miss out on the markets opening day events or any of the events in Sugar Grove.”
