What to do with Latex Paint: The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency no longer accepts latex paint in its household hazardous waste collections as modern latex paint is not considered hazardous for the environment.  It can be placed in the regular garbage, once it has been solidified. If there is a small amount of paint remaining take the lid off and let the paint evaporate outside. For fuller cans, stir in an absorbent, either kitty litter or oil-dry work well, leave the lids off and place the solidified cans in your garbage.

Why does latex paint have to be solidified? Because paint cans pop open in garbage trucks, the paint leaks out of the truck onto local streets, and gets on vehicles, resulting in upset people.
