The Ground Breaking Ceremony for the
Municipal Drive and Galena Boulevard Extensions
was held on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

The Village of Sugar Grove is pleased to announce that on July 17, 2008 a contract was awarded for the extensions of Municipal Drive and Galena Boulevard.  Currently, there is no north-south collector road to the west of Illinois Route 47 within the Village.   The extensions of Municipal Drive to Galena Boulevard will not only achieve traffic relief in the area but spur economic development within the Village.

Providing a safe and efficient transportation system requires advanced planning. Recognizing this, the Village of Sugar Grove prepared a Transportation Plan to identify and plan for future area transportation needs. This document identified the Municipal Drive / Galena Boulevard from Illinois Route 47 west to Illinois Route 30 as a needed addition to the transportation system.

“The Village received funding in the amount of $3.5 million from the federal government secured by former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.  I and the Board sincerely appreciate the work done by Mr. Hastert on behalf of the State of Illinois and our region during his tenure as state representative as well as his current endeavors to further ensure that Illinois continues to prosper through additional improvements and extensions  to our infrastructure”, Village President P. Sean Michels, “The receipt of federal funds coupled with the hard work of Village staff and Engineering Enterprises, Inc, and most of all the cooperation of the Illinois Department of Transportation, the City of Aurora, the Aurora Municipal Airport,  and local land owners moved this project from a vision to a reality in an expedited and efficient manner.   Our thanks to all as the extension of Municipal Drive and Galena Boulevard would not have been possible without their support and cooperation.”

The extensions were bid in two separate contracts.  Contract A – roadway construction was awarded by Sugar Grove on July 17, 2008 to Schlichting & Sons. Contract B –intersection improvement construction was bid by the Illinois Department of Transportation.  The award announcement for Contract B is expected by mid August 2008.  Construction for both contracts is scheduled to be completed in early August 2009.
